While some people are born artists, others take time to evolve and get experienced as they paint and learn more about the medium of oil. It is not easy to become a good oil painter as this is a tough medium to master. A beginner artist can get overwhelmed with things like perspective, techniques, color mixing and materials. The oil paintings I make are often made with tools like palette knives and a paint brush on canvas using different textures and colors

If you are thinking of becoming an accomplished artist and holding your exhibition of oil paintings in Pakistan, then get ready for lots of hours of hard work and labor.

To begin with, student should be well aware of the fundamentals of oil painting and arm themselves with an enormous amount of patience. After all, one cannot expect to create a professional level of work in the beginning. In fact, the painting will be a lot worse than you may anticipate. But if one is determined in their objectives, they will soon overcome all those initial hiccups and will be well on their way of becoming a good artist in the oil medium. The key here is not to get discouraged and learn from your mistakes. Do not let those early mistakes defeat you in your goals.

One should always focus on how to draw first and it is essential to learn the fundamentals of drawing if you want to improve your oil paintings. Most important thing will be to get acquainted with the colors if you want producing quality works of art.

Another important part is structure in the painting, if you are painting without structure is doing something without any plan. Structure is like a blueprint of any creation. It can be said as the vision that you want your art piece to look like. Reaching there without any plan or structure is absolutely impossible.

Oil painting

Oil painting is bit more complicated compared to others like acrylic or watercolor. One thing is that they are not as fast when it comes to drying like acrylic or watercolor. It takes a longer time to dry. It can be fun and adventurous to work with and the end results of these paints if used properly are marvelous. But for beginners, it might be difficult to understand it.
The drawback of using oil paints is that when you paint one color next to another on your canvas, they taint one another easily.

A few sessions of painting classes in my studio (Sajida’s Fine Art Classes Islamabad) are going to give a good knowledge about these wonderful paints. These classes are available for those who want to learn it. It is always better to know a bit about what you are going to learn in the classes because; this will help improvise you better in the classes.

Some basic things are needed to know about oil paint like the main and the most important thing is to know the chemical composition does. It is composed of a drying oil and pigment particles. The type of oil used can differ which can in turn differ the texture while painting on the canvas. The effect after the paint dries can also vary due to the type of oil used. Linseed oil is the most common oil used in oil paints. It has resistance towards cracking.

To thin down the thickness of the oil paint, there are solvent available. The most common solvent used is the turpentine. Turpentine is flammable, has a pungent odor, and should not be inhaled. Hence while using it; one should work in an area with good ventilation. The solvents are not just used for thinning the paint, but are also used to clean the brushes after painting. They are also used to clean the palette on which oil paint was used. The solvent dilutes the oil in the paint and makes it thin. However, they also help the oil paint to dry faster once mixed with them but does not alter the effect.

Before starting painting, priming the canvas is very important, because the oil in the paint can degenerate the canvas over time. Priming also helps the paint to adhere well to the canvas. At least three even and thin coats of priming should be done before starting to paint to have good effects. While doing it, the bottom layers of paint should be thinner than the top layers with oil paint in order to prevent it from cracking. This is because; the bottom layers absorb oil from the top layers. If the top layer dries faster than the bottom layer, then it can shrink and cause cracking of the painting. This procedure is called fat over lean procedure.

Horse oil Painting with pallet knife by sajida hussain fine art tips

Painting with pallet knife

Pallet knife technique is use of knives in applying paint. Undoubtedly the painting knife, as far as the oil painter is concerned, is a very useful tool which can produce effects completely outside the scope of any brush. It is, however, a tool that requires moderation. The successful artist with a knife must needs be confident in application, as an uncertain stroke will ruin the whole picture, draining out the freshness and spontaneous sparkle which the knife can produce; also an amendment to the painting is almost impossible to do successfully.

I use oil paints in tubes so when you squeeze it out onto your palette; you mix it with your palette knife and use a knife to apply it to your canvas. The thickness and composition of the paint means that it is very slow drying. Paintings done in oil typically take around 72 hours to dry.

The upside of the delayed drying time is that you can make adjustments to refine your painting. This can be done for up to twelve hours after you paint the canvas. You can make gradual shifts from one color to another. If you are using oil paints, you can also completely remove things from your canvas with your palette knife.

To begin an oil painting, you need to sketch your subject onto the canvas. Brushes are also used to apply the paint to the canvas. The brush is the most vital tool an artist has. One of the markers of a talented artist is difficulty painting with poor quality brushes. You want a brush that maintains its shape even when loaded down with paint. At the conclusion of each stroke, the brush will return to its original shape. Flats are the most versatile brushes, used for a variety of strokes and blending.

Start with a basic set of colors, which will allow you to blend to create whatever shade you would like. Essentially, you want to buy a white, a black, and then warm and cool shade of each color. Buy cheaper artist’s colors rather than student colors, as they are higher quality. If you buy a warm and cool version of each primary color, you will have an easier time mixing. Many experts also suggest that you buy a warm and cool green as well. You will quickly learn how to mix colors.
